Latest launch information:22nd August 2019
The Swanage RNLI volunteers were called to assist a 10m yacht with 2 POB at lunchtime today. The skipper of the yacht reported to the UK Coastguard that they had an electrical fire on board and required assistance. The skipper thought that the fire was out now and he had disconnected the yacht’s battery as a precaution. The lifeboat launched and proceeded to the yacht’s last known position. The yacht’s skipper provided an updated position and using the lifeboat’s radio direction finder the yacht was quickly located. Two crew members were put aboard the yacht to assess the situation and the status of the fire. It was clear that there had been an electrical fire on the yacht’s engine but it appeared to be out now. The yacht’s skipper had breathed in quite a bit of smoke so he was put on oxygen to help relieve his cough. The yacht was then taken in tow to Poole Harbour so it could be checked over by Dorset Fire & Rescue. Once alongside at South Quay the yacht was met by the volunteers from Poole Coastguard, Dorset Fire & Rescue were briefed and taken aboard the yacht. The yacht’s skipper was also given a check over by South West ambulance. Once the yacht and its skipper were given the all clear the yacht was towed to the Port of Poole Marina so the repairs could be arranged. The lifeboat was then released to return to Swanage.
