Latest launch information:26th September 2021
The Swanage lifeboat volunteers were paged this afternoon for an immediate launch of the all weather lifeboat when a yacht broadcast a ‘Mayday’ close to Old Harry Rocks. The yacht reported having a fire onboard and requested immediate assistance, following the initial broadcast the UK Coastguard were unable to raise the yacht on the radio again. The lifeboat launched and made its way to the scene at full speed, In the time it took for the lifeboat to launch a border force vessel in the area responded to the ‘Mayday’ and had launched its rib to assist too. Both boats arrived on scene at about the same time and two lifeboat crewmembers were put aboard the yacht to get a further update on their situation. It transpired that the yacht had suffered an electrical fire below decks. The yacht’s crew had managed to isolate the boat’s batteries, this meant that all their electrics were disabled but the situation was now under control. The decision was taken to take the yacht in tow back in to Poole Harbour so the towline was passed across and good speed made towards their berth. Poole lifeboat was already out on another call but when they finished their prior tasking they rendezvoused with the Swanage crew to take over the tow and return the yacht to its mooring. Once the tow was handed over the Swanage crew were released to return to station.
