Latest launch information:10th June 2019
Swanage’s all weather lifeboat was requested to launch this evening. Solent Coastguard had received a report of a 14m yacht drifting towards the shore in Studland Bay. The skipper wasn’t on board and it was thought that nobody else was on board but the Coastguard were concerned about possible pollution if the yacht came ashore in the NE winds forecast overnight. The lifeboat launched and with it being a non-urgent call some trainee crew members were taken to gain some experience of working with other vessels. As the lifeboat rounded Old Harry Rocks the yacht (the only one in the bay) was spotted and the lifeboat headed towards it. As the lifeboat got closer it became apparent that the yacht was aground on the soft sand off Middle Beach. Crew members were put aboard to attempt to recover the yacht’s anchor and connect a towline. The yacht was gently pulled round in to the wind and the anchor recovered, after some careful maneuvering the yacht was gently pulled in to deeper water. The towline was lengthened and the yacht towed back to Swanage where it was secured to the RNLI mooring so the owner could collect it. With the situation resolved the lifeboat was released, she was recovered on to her slipway and washed down in the rain!
