Latest launch information:15th October 2018
A ‘999’ call to the UK Coastguard sparked a search for a yacht this evening after the caller said his engine had failed and he didn’t know his precise location, but it was ‘somewhere between the Needles and Old Harry’. The call dropped (it transpired that the phone’s battery had died) leaving the UK Coastguard with little information to work on.
Lymington lifeboat was already out on exercise so they were tasked to search the eastern section of the area and Swanage lifeboat was tasked with searching from Swanage to the east. The flat sea conditions at the time were good for using radar and a few targets were quickly locked into the Shannon class lifeboat’s SIMS computers. The first target contacted was a diver from the dive vessel ‘Rocket’ conducting a night dive north of Peveril Ledge, the second turned out to be a large yacht, but not the one in difficulties. The third target, slight further to the North East was the missing yacht in a position about 4nm east of Old Harry.
As the local forecast included easterly winds, the yacht, with its solo crew, was taken in tow towards Poole Quay Yacht Haven in worsening visibility. After the yacht had been secured at the yacht haven the lifeboat set out on passage back to Swanage in visibility less than 200m, piloting almost entirely using radar and charts. The lifeboat was back on her slipway at 2313hrs.
