Latest launch information:14th October 2017
A mobile phone call from two people in a small open boat prompted the UK Coastguard to ask for help from the Swanage Lifeboats and the Kimmeridge Bay volunteer coastguard team.
The people calling had got lost after fog had closed in on them, somewhere in the region of Kimmeridge Bay. To compound matters, they had no lights, radio or flares and a mobile signal was far from guaranteed.
The launch of both lifeboats was authorised and shortly afterwards the larger all-weather lifeboat (ALB) led the way across Durlston Bay in very poor visibility. The inshore lifeboat (ILB) followed closely, taking advantage of both the ALB’s radar and electronic navigation systems as well as the area of flattened water in its wake.
About 40 minutes later the boats arrived off Kimmeridge. The Coastguard team on the clifftop had not been able to sight anything through the fog, but a radar target nearly a mile further west was investigated and proved to be the lost vessel – a 15’ motor boat. Both occupants were fine but grateful to have been found and the ILB escorted them back to Kimmeridge Bay where they were met by the coastguard. With the situation resolved both boats were able to retrace their steps, arriving back in Swanage at 2250hrs
