Latest launch information:2nd September 2017
The Swanage volunteers were paged this morning to launch their Shannon class all weather lifeboat ‘George Thomas Lacy’ to a position approx 15Nm SE of Swanage. A passing cargo ship had reported a small grey dinghy in that position but were unable to stop and recover it. The lifeboat was tasked to locate the dinghy, recover it and investigate if anyone was missing from it. The lifeboat launched and was on scene just over 30 minutes later. Nothing was visible so an expanding square search was commenced. About 30 minutes in to the search a message was received from UK Coastguard stating that a fishing vessel had just recovered the dinghy. The fishing vessel was about 1/3 of a nautical mile South of the Lifeboat’s position and would have been covered on the next sweep of the search pattern. The lifeboat came alongside the fishing boat, took the dinghy off them, checked it over to find a broken painter on the bow and no signs of being occupied. This was reported to UK Coastguard. Once they were happy that nobody was missing the lifeboat was released to return to Swanage with the dinghy. Its likely that the dinghy is a tender to a boat and has come adrift at some point, if its yours contact the Coastguard!
