Our official Shannon training starts tomorrow
Our official Shannon training starts on Mon 29 Feb with a 5 day ‘Waterjet boat handling’ course at RNLI HQ in Poole.
Four of our crew, Dave Turnbull, Steve Williams, Gavin Steeden and John Deas will be undertaking the course to give them the skills to operate our new lifeboat. Waterjet powered boats do handle quite differently to conventional boats and the week at the college is all about understanding the differences and learning what waterjet boats can do.
The beginning of the week the crew will be using ‘Odyn’ a 43’ RIB that the RNLI bought to trial waterjets a good few years ago. She’s a similar size to a Shannon but with the inflatable tubes all the way round it means that the odd knocks and bumps are easily overcome.
Later in the week they’ll move on to a relief Shannon and transfer the skills that they learnt earlier in the week.
Hopefully we’ll be able to add for photos from the training as the week goes on. This overview from Hamilton jets is an interesting read - www.hamiltonjet.com/global/waterjet-overview
